After agreeing with SSE that I wasn't prepared to have an engineer visit as this issue is obviously not on my side but theirs, they agreed to waive my termination fees.
I therefore went ahead and signed up to BT last night. Topcashback increased their cashback rates yesterday for BT so it was perfect timing.
My transfer is due in exactly 2 weeks time.

Do you have to pay the activation charge considering you already have fibre? I have tried to ask the question, but it seems the call centre don't understand Doesn't bode well..

Yes, I have had to pay the activation fee, but SSE have kindly offered to cover the costs of the move - due to the previous issues.

Re: Order Placed for Transfer to BT from SSE
Just to update everyone - I've been back with BT for just short of two months now and are no longer experiencing the slow down issues I was previously experiencing with SSE.
My evening speeds are the same as my day time speeds and are very good.
Maybe once SSE have ironed out their issues it will be a good service.
