Speed Issues after 8pm in the evening

There have been various reports of people experiencing slow downs after 8pm each evenings with SSE Broadband.

I've had a quick look on SSE's Facebook page and people are mentioning it on there too.

Has anyone who has experienced this issue reported it to SSE ? - Did they say they were aware of the issue (which they must be) or gave any further explanation on the problems ?

Thanks in advance

Oh dear seems even the admin is having speed problems, still waiting to go live on 21st June but looks like even yourself who started off ok is being throttled at night. :(

I doubt very much it is throttling but under capacity, 2 very different things. I haven't seen any of the TBB graphs yet which may help diagnose where the issue lies, but many isp's have suffered this issue in the past. It's all about how it is resolved.

It is quite interesting to see how the throttling works from an end user perspective; it definately can make speedtest results bad, downloads bad yet certain other traffic remain quite useable; - as I said elsewhere they do state this can/will happen in their T&C's so no surprises really.

Regarding yesterday afternoon/evening, the England footie match and subsequent streaming by the masses caused a real problem, and not just with SSE from what I have read elsewhere ; this really looked like a real running out of capacity (even my upstream collapsed which it doesn't do normally)

As you rightly said, it is how they deal with this in the future that will be interesting.
I believe thay are totally buried with new punters, and they will be quite aware they need to up the capacity with Daisy to compensate for the influx...

Since joining on 10th June, I have had a couple of time where there has been slow speed, which last for the Afternoon, or Evening.

I have been monitoring traffic management, and when it is in play peer to peer traffic does slow down to a snails pace. I had expected the need to buy a vpn, but I am not a heavy peer to peer user, and I think I can cope with the traffic management.

Was nicer on BT's network without traffic management, but at £21 per month with anytime calls, just not worth the extra expense.

To answer original question, with the exception of managed traffic, my speeds after 8pm have been consistent with speeds before 8pm

My experience is that everything is shaped/throttled wholesale, and even more so after 20:00hr. At no point during the day, at least when I am awake and using a computer, do I get download speeds that resemble a fibre broadband experience. No matter what I do, watching iplayer or youtube, updating the apps on my phones/iPad, or even surfing the web. Everything is just slow slow slow. Like when 1Mbps ADSL rolled out for the first time and hailed as the next best thing..

As I have stated before, I do not mind that at certain times during the day traffice is throttled. But when you sign up to a fibre broadband connection, on which the promise you up 65 mbps ( when with BT I had a consistent 80 mbps ), and you never get close to that number, then something is wrong. And it is not congestion, or a bad line or a crappy modem/router. The only thing that is keeping me from enjoying fibre speeds is SSE/Daisy throttling the life out of it.

I know my line is capable of at least 57mbps downloading an ubuntu torrent because I have done it. But when you download the same file on http it slows down to an unexplainable 6mbps. Same time of day, same line & same conditions...

6 days ago I posted a complaint with SSE online. 2 days later I phoned up, and I was told someone would contact me. Since I already logged one complaint, the system could not log a second one over the phone, not before the first complaint was actioned....

To be continued...

yep, noticed mine when I was trying to video call the other half, wasn't happening when I switched to 4G on the phone, so I knew it was my end.

Trying to get SSE to admit it, which they arn't doing, instead they are wasting my time, and going around in circles, getting me to do speed tests, even after an engineer has been out and said nothing is wrong.

It depends how you contact them - I hadn't raised the issue before and couldn't be bothered with talking to them on the phone, so used the online complaint form to explain what my issue was (I also attached samknows whitebox charts showing the regular issue each evening), that it was congestion on their end due to their new offer (I've been with them since last summer and had congestion for two months when I first month until they upgraded capacity) and asking when there would be a fix in place for the congestion this time.

They responded within a few days saying that I was correct, it was congestion but there was no date they could give me for a fix (they didn't want to send an engineer out or anything). They offered that I could leave my contract early with no termination fees, but since it wasn't affecting me too badly at the time I said I would stay and see how it goes. That was a month ago and it's only got worse so I'm thinking about taking them up on their offer!

I ended up speaking to their Social Media manager, he was good, although as he wasn't a techie, didn't really know what was going on. I did log a call initially, to be told someone would get back to me, but didn't hear anything. So my annoyance took hold and I posted on their Facebook page, which did result in someone contacting me.

Thankfully I can leave my contract as an when I decide to, however, we are going to try a fix, as the service when it works is great, and prices are fab as well. If the fix works then great, if not I'll have to move on.
