Large download file (1GB) for testing download speeds

Postby admin » Tue Jun 14, 2016 7:10 pm

The following file can be used for testing download speeds:

This has been uploaded by myself to a hosting site solely for the purpose of testing download speeds.

The host seems particularly slow, max download speed I get is around 900 Kb/s.

Search on google for sites that offer large test files for download.
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download/ full speed at 8.2 Mb/sec
http://engineerhammad.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/Download-Test-Files.html I get up to 5-6 Mb/sec
http://speedtest.reliableservers.com/ 5 Mb/sec
http://www.azurespeed.com/Azure/Download Select an european server and I get 8.2 Mb/sec

Please note I stated the speed in Kilobyte/sec (Kb/s) or Megabyte/sec (Mb/sec) not the usual speedtest Megabits/sec (Mbps)

Below a current speedtest on my line:

Thinkbroadband 1Gb file now downloads at 700-900kb/s on SSE ultrafast
Engineer Hammad 10Gb FTP downloads at 90 kb/s :o
Reliable Servers 1Gb downloads at 500-700 kb/s
Azurespeed from an European server downloads at 2 Mb/s, but from an US Server it drops down to 600 kb/s

Eventhough I should have a flying connection according to speedtest:

Also done a few tracert queries on a few popular UK websites, i.e. Google, Youtube (=Google), BT Wholesale speedtest and BBC. All these sites seem to have a dedicated daisy server attached to it. This might explain why youtube/iplayer seems to hold up pretty OK, even at busier times, whereas normal download traffic is heavily shaped/throttled.
